Is laminate right for you?

A wood look for less, in the right rooms

Laminate is one of the most budget-friendly ways to get a wood look. Its hard-wearing surface resists scratches from everyday traffic, and because it floats over a pad, it can go over many existing hard floors.

Laminate is sensitive to moisture, so it’s best kept to dry living areas and bedrooms. For bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements, LVP or LVT is usually the better choice. Mixing floors room by room is common and looks great with the right transitions.

How we install laminate

  • Floating click-lock only, following the manufacturer’s instructions
  • A pad, every time: either attached to the planks or a separate roll we install first
  • Acclimated inside your home for 3–5 days, never in the garage
  • Concrete is always sealed first (priced separately)
  • Expansion gaps as the product requires, covered by baseboards or quarter round

Our process

How a laminate installation goes

  1. Step 1: Measure and check the floor

We measure, check how flat the floor is and what’s underneath, and help you choose a quality product and pad.

  2. Step 2: Delivery and acclimation

The laminate is delivered 3–5 days before installation to acclimate inside your home. Some products need longer.

  3. Step 3: Removal and preparation

Old flooring comes out when it’s part of your estimate. Light preparation is included; leveling, repairs and concrete sealing are listed separately.

  4. Step 4: Pad and installation

Attached-pad planks go straight over the prepared floor. Otherwise we install a separate pad first, then click the laminate together.

  5. Step 5: Trim and transitions

Baseboards or quarter round go back on over the expansion gap. Most small, standard transitions are included.

  6. Step 6: Walk through

We walk through the finished floor with you and hand over care instructions and your warranty information.

Pricing

Typical laminate prices

Approximate labor guidelines, not quotes. Laminate and pad material are priced separately.

Typical laminate prices
ServiceTypical labor

Minimum project price $800

Listed separately in your estimate when needed: removal of the old floor, concrete sealing (always required over concrete), leveling, appliance disconnect and reset, furniture moving and delivery.

Plan for future repairs

Laminate styles are discontinued often. We recommend keeping 2–3 extra boxes of your flooring in a dry place, so damaged planks can be replaced later.

Laminate can’t be feathered into an old floor like hardwood. Continuing an existing floor into a new room needs exactly the same brand, product run and color, and even then a seamless continuation isn’t always possible.

Product quality

Choosing a laminate that installs well

You’re welcome to choose your own flooring. Very inexpensive, clearance or discontinued products can have weak locking systems, inconsistent sizing or little manufacturer support. Not every inexpensive product has problems, but installation can’t fix a defective product.

If a product looks risky, we’ll tell you why and suggest alternatives before you buy.

We don’t install laminate over

  • Carpet or other soft flooring
  • Unstable or unsuitable surfaces

Laminate can go over plywood, sealed concrete and suitable existing hard floors, including tile, when the surface is solid, stable and properly prepared.

FAQ

Laminate questions

Laminate or LVP: which is better?

Laminate gives you a wood look for less and has a hard-wearing surface, but it is sensitive to moisture, so it is best in dry living areas and bedrooms. LVP is the better choice for bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements. Compare them in our flooring guide.

What does laminate installation involve?

We install floating click-lock laminate over a pad. A pad is always required, either attached to the planks or installed separately. Laminate acclimates inside your home for 3–5 days, and concrete slabs are sealed first.
