Frequently Asked Questions
How much does flooring typically cost?
Every project is different, but these are typical starting price ranges to help you understand what to expect:
• Hardwood floor refinishing: approximately $4 – $5 per square foot. (Including 3 coats of finish)
• Hardwood floor wood stain: approximately $0.75 - $1.50 per square foot. (Depending on color)
• Pre-finished hardwood installation: approximately $3 – $6 per square foot. (Depending on the installation method and whether glue-assist is required)
• Laminate flooring installation: approximately $2 – $3 per square foot.
• LVP and LVT flooring installation: approximately $3.50 - $4.50 per square foot. (Small area like bathroom will cost slightly more)

Your final labor price depends on the condition of the existing floor or subfloor, project size, layout, preparation, and other project-specific requirements. Flooring materials such as hardwood, LVP, and laminate are quoted separately based on the product, color, style, and selection you choose.*
How soon can I walk on my newly refinished floor?
You can generally walk on the floor the day after the finish is applied. However, we recommend waiting at least 3 full days before putting furniture back on the floor.
When can I put area rugs back on my refinished floor?
For water-based finishes, we recommend waiting at least 1 week before placing area rugs on the floor. For Swedish Finish, we recommend waiting the full 3 weeks.
How should I protect my new hardwood floors?
Use felt pads or glides under furniture legs and always lift furniture rather than dragging it across the floor. Entryway mats with watertight backing can also help protect your floors from water, dirt, and grit.
How do I clean and maintain my hardwood floors?
We recommend vacuuming or using a microfiber dust mop regularly to remove dirt and grit. Avoid too much water when wet mopping hardwood floors. When mopping, the floor should dry within 2-3 minutes. If water remains after 2-3 minutes, you are using too much water. Clean spills promptly, especially pet urine, which can cause permanent damage if left untreated.
Do you recommend robot vacuums with mopping?
Yes! We highly recommend a good robot vacuum with a mopping function for many homes. We use one in our own home and have been very impressed with how well it keeps floors clean.
Robot vacuums use a controlled amount of water while vacuuming and mopping, making them especially convenient for LVP, LVT, laminate, and other hard-surface floors. They can help keep dirt and grit off your floors between regular cleanings, which is important because grit can act like sandpaper and create scratches over time.
For hardwood floors, avoid leaving excess water or moisture on hardwood floors. The water on the floor should dry 1-2 min after the vacuum passes the area.
Can I wax or use oil soap on my hardwood floors?
If your floor has a Swedish Finish, or water-based finish, do not use wax or oil soap. These products can leave a coating that prevents future finish from properly bonding to the floor and may require a more extensive refinish later. Use wax only with wax-coated floors.
How often should hardwood floors be recoated?
We generally recommend having hardwood floors recoated every 5–7 years. A maintenance recoat can help protect the finish and extend the life of your floor before a full sanding and refinishing becomes necessary. Full refinish of floors: 15-25 years depending on use.
What happens if my floor needs repairs or preparation?
We'll evaluate the condition of your floor during the estimate and let you know if repairs, subfloor preparation, leveling, or other preparation is needed before installation or refinishing. We'll explain what is needed and why before any work begins.
